SWP Preview Clip 2

Episode: Meet the Team

Special Facilitator Note:

The recommended applications, context, discussion issues and reinforcement activities are provided to stimulate your own creative use of the SWP D-I-S-C Challenge Movie Clips. Be guided by your own experience and the specifics of the intervention to add value to your facilitation.

We recommend that you incorporate the context setting information, discussion suggestions and reinforcement activities in your PowerPoint presentation and participant materials. You might also want to insert a hyperlink to the movie clips URL in your presentation.

Application:
  • Reinforcement of behavioral style recognition
  • Use of 4-quadrant classification techniques
  • Recognition of the powerful impact of non-verbal communication
  • Internal customer service observation and critique
  • Discussion of the pitfalls of “first impression labeling” of others in the context of “when I first met you, I thought…” confessions as well as the need to change behaviors to suit circumstances
  • Provision of support for Team Building training/coaching – early phases (Forming)
  • Support for Leadership and Supervisory Management coaching.

Context setting:

Meet the Team - context setting

We judge others very quickly based on how they present themselves at the outset. We are proud to admit that “first impressions are lasting ones”.

What would you conclude about each of the characters that you meet in the movie clip that we are about to view?

As you watch, pay special attention to how the characters exchange introductions. Try to relate their behavior to what you know so far about the four basic behavioral styles.

What non-verbal signals did you get from each character?

What are implications of those signals in the context of Customer service/Team Building/ Leadership/Supervisory Management?

Watching the Movie Clip Again

Application:

Repeat viewing of the movie clip is often used:
  1. During the actual intervention to support discussion, participant self discovery of key principles and as reinforcement.
  2. After the actual event to facilitate participants’ review and sharing with others and as reinforcement.

Context setting for participants:

Meet the Team - Repeat viewing during session

We are going to watch the movie clip again. As you watch, ask yourself these questions:
  • Why does Don introduce himself as “Don with a D?” Does he really think people might mis-spell his name, or does the remark reflect his behavioral style in some way?
  • Why does Iris echo Don's remark?
  • Which characters are put off by Don's remark? Based on what you know about the basic styles, what do you think that they might dislike about his greeting?
  • Which character appreciates identifying the goal the most, and why?
  • Can you relate who leads at different points in the video to their basic behavioral style?

Some of these questions may have more than one answer; but, no matter how you answer, thinking about these questions will help you to learn the course contents.

You will probably find that going back through the module will help you come up with answers for these questions.
