Episode: Welcome to the D-I-S-C Challenge

Facilitator:

The recommended applications, context, discussion issues and reinforcement activities are provided to stimulate your own creative use of the SWP D-I-S-C Challenge Movie Clips. Be guided by your own experience and the specifics of the intervention to add value to your facilitation

We recommend that you incorporate the context setting information, discussion suggestions and reinforcement activities in your PowerPoint presentation and participant materials. You might also want to insert a hyperlink to the movie clips URL in your presentation.

Application:

Any training or coaching intervention that incorporates references to behavioral styles, especially those using concepts based on the four quadrant model of behavior of individuals.

Context setting:

Welcome to the D-I-S-C Challenge_Context Setting

As we go through life from situation to situation we chose strategies that we think will best address those situations. If we kept a record of the strategies that we use we will find that we use some strategies more often than others.

We all develop a preference for certain approaches for coping with the situations that we face. Those preferences represent our behavioral styles. We tend to choose styles with which we are comfortable and which we think will best help us to achieve our objectives.

Carl Jung developed a theory that our coping strategies could be classified into four basic groups. That theory has been widely accepted and validated over the years and serves as the foundation for much of the behavioral analysis that takes place today.

We are going to watch a movie clip with four characters. Each one is using a coping strategy that is linked to one of the four basic behavioral styles.

As you watch this movie clip, try to summarize in a quick list things that come to your mind about the way each character speaks and acts.

Review Issues

Application:

Repeat viewing of the movie clip is often used:
  1. During the actual intervention to support discussion, participant self discovery of key principles and as reinforcement.
  2. After the actual event to facilitate participants’ review and sharing with others and as reinforcement.

Context setting for participants:

Welcome to the D-I-S-C Challenge Repeat viewing during session

As we go through life from situation to situation we chose strategies that we think will best address those situations. If we kept a record of the strategies that we use we will find that we use some strategies more often than others.

Inter-personal relations are not easily reduced to a precise science. We all take a somewhat different perspective into the process. Much of the value that you will gain from this intervention will come from your own reflections.

We are going to watch this movie clip again.

Here are some issues that I want you to think about and discuss:
  • How close were the things that you wrote down in your short list of things that jumped out at you to the description of the four behavioral styles in your notes?
  • What other ways could each character have introduced himself or herself and what would be the implications?
  • When Iris says that telling your preferred style is like telling your age, how serious is she? If she isn't serious, why does she say that?
  • Why is Carl the only one to give his last name?
  • Why is Sonia worried about being late?
  • Don seems to be in a hurry, and many people might consider him rude. What does his behavior suggest about his attitude towards the meeting?

Welcome to the D-I-S-C Challenge_Reinforcement AFTER session

I am going to ask you to watch this movie clip again after today’s intervention. Information on the online link and your access code and password are in your folders. [You will also find a reminder in your e-mail Inbox when you get back to your desk.]

As you watch the movie clip again, ask yourself the questions below and reflect further on them. I would strongly urge that you watch and discuss them with your colleagues, your friends and definitely with your family!

You will be surprised at the breakthrough moments that you will experience that will have positive impact on how you relate to those individuals in the future.

Print this list of issues to be used for participant reinforcement after this session.
